USC has published a depth chart before the first game of the season for every coach from John McKay to Steve Sarkisian.
But for at least the third straight year, Clay Helton declined to put out a depth chart for the season-opening game.
Why? In the past, Helton said all positions are open and he believes in competition.
But the truth is a depth chart is basically settled at most positions going into the first game. Helton simply doesn’t want to offend anyone before the season starts. He doesn’t want to offend anyone once the season starts either but once games begin, someone has to start.
This is just another one of those odd things Helton does.
He tries to come across as Mr. Affable. But he barely spoke to the media the past week. This is also odd because he rarely gets tough questions to answer.
But he’s been the coach at USC long enough that he pretty much gets to do what he wants, no matter where he takes the program.
Clay Helton doesn’t want to offend … Clay Helton wants to be Mr Affable … Clay Helton is a PUSSY … always has been, always will be. The depth chart is a reward to those who’ve earned a starting position … it’s about competition and bragging rights and chest thumping. The depth chart is also a challenge to non-starters that they need to re-double their efforts and do more. Saban and Urban don’t have this character flaw of needing to be Mr Affable … they don’t have time for that BS ass-kissery … it would diminish them.
USC football under Clay Helton has become a kind of microcosm of the country. Clay smiles and talks crazy talk. Media accepts it.
