Welcome to the Friday USC notes column supplement.
I had a note in today’s column on Chick Hearn calling USC games in 1958.
Who else did USC games in the 1940’s-50’s?
Al Helfer, Frank Bull, Tom Harmon (father of Mark Harmon) and L.A. Times sports colmnist Braven Dyer were among those who did games.
Bull was also the stadium announcer for the Los Angeles Rams home games in the 1950s and into the early 1960’s.
By 1947, Bull had been doing college football games for 20 years and was considered “the dean of Southern California sportscasters.”
Here’s a sample of Bull and Mark Scott (the host of Home Run Derby) doing the 1953 USC-Notre Dame game. Bull starts talking around the 1:10 mark.
Did you recognize the tailbacks in this 1994 photo? Answer below:
It is Terry Barnum (21) and Rodney Sermons (25).
Barnum’s son, Alexander, is a sprinter on the USC track team.
Scott, appreciate the USC history and the old stories and photos. Charles
i started listening to Trojan football in 1942. That 1953 game brought back all those familiar names too. Some great player and memories. Thanx
