Welcome to the Friday USC Notes Column Supplement.
Let’s talk a minute about Clarence Davis.
He came to USC after leading East Los Angeles College to an 11-1 record and set a national JC rushing record. Davis gained more than 200 yards in an 11-0 victory vs. arch-rival Los Angeles City College and had a 70-yard TD run.
Davis then came to USC and rushed for 1,357 yards and nine TDs his junior season.
“I didn’t expect it,” Davis said of his success during his junior season. “I didn’t realize it until mid-season. It doesn’t bother me carrying so much. I carried a lot in JC. You know you’ll get hit in a game, and you get used to it.”
At the time, he became USC’s No. 4 all-time single-season rusher just behind No. 3 Mike Garrett (1,440 yards in 1965).
Here is the UPI All-West Coast team in 1969.
Talk about times changing. Here’s a description from the pressbox at the 1969 USC-UCLA football game.
“One Daily Bruin writer spent the whole game nervously chain-smoking in the press box.”
USC linebacker Greg Slough, a Playboy All-American, was chided after the Trojans defeated UCLA, 14-12 in 1969.
“You guys blew it!” he was told. “You gave UCLA 12 points, while the freshmen and the Daily Trojan only gave them six each!”
The USC freshmen won, 48-6, while the Daily Trojan defeated the Daily Bruin, 25-6, in the annual Blood Bowl.
Scott really appreciate your knowledge of USC football history and I learn so much. You do a better job of this already than anyone else, but we (the USC fans) need more. We need dirt on Carol Folt, Mike Bohn, Marc Benioff, Rick Caruso, and Brendan … pffft Clay Helton is effin stooge. Love USC football and it should be so much more ✌️
Scott is far too modest to bring it up ---but those 26 points scored by the Daily Trojan.....
