USC Had Chance To Rise To Occasion But Did Not
Sam “Bam” Cunningham was an iconic USC player in the past 50 years.
So when he died yesterday, it was a shock to many. And USC was not ready to step up and handle the situation.
The obituary on USC’s website is shameful given the significance of Cunningham as a national figure. It’s really short and mainly a bunch of twitter reactions from former USC players. And it came out several hours after Cunningham, when the news had already leaked from within the USC football program.
What’s worse is USC wrote more words when a booster died last year.
You can’t give a booster an obituary more than a player than fans universally remember fondly and who remained a popular figure for six decades.
Cunningham deserved a big obituary to match his presence as USC football royalty.
It’s stunning USC is treating it like just another player dying. Then again, USC failed to write obituaries on Bill Nelsen, Manfred Moore and Kenny Moore.
USC had a chance to rise to the occasion and probably honor Cunningham. It failed.
I criticize USC a lot, but I thought USC’s write-up here was acceptable. Normally an obituary comes from a newspaper or funeral home with input from the family about personal details. At least USC put out something unlike with the other players Wolf mentioned.
The current bunch plainly doesn't appreciate USC tradition or past glory---so I guess we can take solace in the fact they didn't try to fake it.
