Welcome to the USC Friday Notes Column Supplement. Let’s take a deeper look at Ricky Bell, who I have no problem saying should be one of the top 5 tailbacks in USC history. Bell made his first start in the season-opener in 1975 vs. Duke. He rushed for a school record 256 yards in 34 carries.
Ricky Bell was an absolute stud and every bit the back that Tony Dorsett was and more. Should've won the Heisman, but this was before we understood the east coast bias. It's a shame Bell couldn't have gone to the Cowboys instead of to McKay's horrible expansion team, the Buccaneers. All of the accolades and Super Bowls that went to Dorsett as a Cowboy, would've been Bell's and he would have been in the HOF in college and the NFL. A cruel twist of fate followed by the even worse fate of his very young passing. Ricky, you are still remembered and missed by those Trojan fans that saw you play. RIP.

Thanks for the great story and insight on Ricky Bell. One of my favorite USC football players.
Good, informative story about Ricky Bell. I think Tampa had the #1 pick and McKay took Bell over Dorsett.
